Beer Focus: Equilibrium Brewery – Morning Haze DIPA
Equilibrium Brewery is a brewery that has been on my radar for quite some time. I first heard about Equilibrium 3 years ago from Massive Beer’s review of their Wavelength IPA, since then, I’ve been on a hunt to try some.
If you are unfamiliar with Equilibrium Brewing, allow me to provide you with a brief account of its origins. Equilibrium Brewery came into existence at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with the noble goal of providing clean water to individuals in Haiti, Bangladesh, Vietnam, the United States, and numerous other places. However, during their journey to become proficient in water science and purify contaminated water, they developed a deep affection for Craft Beer. They discovered the profound impact that the Craft Beer community, cherished memories, and lasting friendships can have.
With this, they opened the brewery in 2009, and brewing around 6 batches a day. In 2015, Equilibrium purchased Henry St in Middletown, New York, which became their HQ. Which saw them honing in on their techniques and getting ready to share their beer with the world. In 2017, they released their first bottles of There & Back Again, which was aged on Apricots and Peaches.
Fast-forwarding a couple of years to 2019, Equilibrium quickly outgrew their original taproom at Henry St, and saw the opportunity to create a new brewery taproom complete with beer garden and BBQ and a new retail space, which they acquired and renovated a new space close by in March 2019 at 4 South Street which is now their new home.
I did in fact try some Equilibrium beer at the beginning of 2023, however, I wouldn’t class that as an “official” try as the cans were from an out of date sale on a bottle shop website, and although, okay, I would much prefer to try some “fresh” Equilibrium.
Not only that, but I say “fresh” in quotes, as most USA beer imported to the U.K. is somewhat a few months outside its canned-on date, but still, it is still fresh.
This article explores the beer called Morning Haze, which is a Double IPA with an alcohol content of 8% ABV. It is brewed with Galaxy and Mosaic hops, and the addition of wheat and oats gives it a cloudy and dense appearance. When poured, it has a vibrant tangerine orange colour and a thick foam on top. It reminds me of a previous beer I had from Verdant Brewing Co. called Putty.
The fragrance was enticing, with vibrant hints of pineapple, blueberry, and a rich citrus aroma mixed with resin. The texture is dense, leaving a dry sensation at the end, filled with abundant flavors of citrus, vanilla, and pineapple.
I would have matched this with a burger, specifically a double cheese and bacon one, accompanied by loaded fries or nachos. This beer is perfect to savour alongside your preferred comfort food.
This gets a solid 8.5/10 from me.
