Over the past few weeks, I have been organising some pretty exciting stuff for this blog. Predominantly, I have been sorting out my beer features for February 2026. So, without further ado, I welcome a true classic: The Kernel Brewery.
The Kernel is a long-standing godfather in the London craft beer scene. They offer every beer lover, new or old, something exciting to satisfy their palate. With a huge variety of brews in their arsenal, from their classic Pale Ale through to an Export Stout, Imperial Brown Stout, and a London Sour Cherry, you can be absolutely sure to find something suitable for your taste.

Falling Back to the Pale Ale
I was recently lucky enough to get my hands on their Pale Ale Motueka Citra Nelson. I am a massive lover of all things Pale Ale and IPA. While I recently dabbled my tastebuds in heavier, high-ABV stouts and porters for my Imperial Beer Club review, I always seem to keep falling back to my long-time buddy, the Pale Ale.
There is something about a brilliant pale ale that startles me and makes me just want more. The citrus and the tropical fruits are all there, and I absolutely love it.
Getting my hands on a fresh bottle from The Kernel, I was very optimistic. I did not know exactly what to expect from this specific hop blend, and I wondered whether it would be unbalanced or perfectly refined. Well, I was completely stunned.
Tasting Notes: Aroma and Flavour
Upon opening this delight, the aroma was amazing. I was instantly hit with citrus notes which smelt absolutely stunning, and then slowly the tropical fruits came through. You can totally see why The Kernel Pale Ale releases are so heavily raved about in the craft beer community.
The flavour of the beer was unique and on a totally different scale. It is genuinely hard to describe the satisfaction I got from tasting that first sip. Like the aroma, the citrus is instantly the first thing that hits your palate. It is not overpowering at all. Instead, it is a perfect balance between the sharp citrus bite and the sweeter tropical notes of the Nelson Sauvin and Citra hops.
If you remember the punchy, fruit-forward profiles of the early Pirate Life Brewing imports, this has that same level of quality but with a beautifully refined London edge.
The Verdict and Food Pairing
I would highly recommend the Pale Ale from The Kernel to anyone.
I would pair this with a strong cheese board, rich red meat, or fresh fish. This beer adds a real depth of flavour and easily complements hearty dishes with its bright, tropical notes. If you are ever enjoying a massive Sunday roast at The Chequers Bath, a crisp pale ale exactly like this is the absolute perfect accompaniment.
It is a solid 9/10 from me!
