- Brand: Murdock London is a premium British barbershop brand with a solid range of beard care products available online and in-store.
- Star products: Their beard moisturiser and beard oil are the two worth your money, used together as a daily routine.
- Scent: Woody and tobacco-forward. Not for everyone, but if it is your thing, it is genuinely brilliant.
- Price: Beard oil at £18 (50ml) and moisturiser at £24 (150ml). Not cheap, but both last a good while.
- Best for: Blokes who want a simple, effective beard grooming routine without faff.
I have had a beard for just short of four years now, and if there is one thing nobody tells you before you grow one, it is how much work goes into keeping it looking decent. There are a ridiculous number of products on the market, and half of them are either overpriced nonsense or smell like a department store changing room.
I have never really been a one-brand person when it comes to beard care. I tend to stick to the basics: a beard oil, a moisturiser, and the occasional wash. But when I lived in London, Murdock was my go-to barbershop for a fresh cut and a beard tidy, so when they expanded their product range, I was genuinely curious to try it properly at home.
Here is my honest take.
The Murdock London Beard Grooming Range
The products have had a packaging overhaul in recent years, ditching any unnecessary graphics in favour of a clean, minimal design with nice typography. I am a sucker for good packaging, and this nails it. It looks smart on a bathroom shelf without looking like you are trying too hard.
Beard Moisturiser (£24 / 150 ml)
This is the one that surprised me most. Two pumps after washing your face, worked through the beard before the oil goes on, and your beard immediately feels softer and smells great. It helps condition both the hair and the skin underneath, which is where a lot of blokes go wrong. They focus on the beard and ignore the skin, then wonder why they get beardruff.
The scent is woody with a tobacco note running through it. I know that is not going to be for everyone, but personally I think it is spot on. It is subtle enough not to clash with whatever aftershave or cologne you are using on top.
Beard Oil (£18 / ml)
Three drops. That is all you need. Work it through after the moisturiser, and you are done. The oil deepens the scent, adds a bit of natural-looking shine, and leaves the beard feeling genuinely soft rather than crunchy or stiff.
I have used cheaper beard oils that do a similar job on paper, but the Murdock one sits differently. It absorbs quickly and does not leave that greasy film that cheaper options tend to. At £18 it is not going to break the bank either, especially given how long a 50ml bottle lasts when you are only using three drops a day.
After applying both, run a comb or a Tangle Teezer through the beard, and you are sorted. It takes two minutes once you are in the habit.
The Murdock Website and Subscription
Along with the rebrand, Murdock updated their website considerably, and it is much better for it. One thing worth knowing is that they offer a subscription option, with monthly, bimonthly, or quarterly deliveries available. If you get through beard oil quickly or want to make sure you never run out, it is a handy option and works out slightly cheaper than buying one-off each time.

My Daily Beard Grooming Routine
For anyone wanting a simple structure to follow, here is what I do every morning. It takes under five minutes and covers everything your beard actually needs.
- Wash face and beard with warm water (I use a dedicated beard wash two or three times a week rather than every day)
- Pat dry, then apply two pumps of the Murdock beard moisturiser and work it through
- Follow with three drops of beard oil
- Comb through and you are done
That is genuinely it. You do not need ten products. You need a moisturiser, an oil, and a decent wash. If you want to explore more options for your full grooming routine, including skincare and winter picks, have a look at some of the other posts on the site.
Is Murdock London Worth It?
For the beard oil and moisturiser, yes. These are genuinely good products that do what they say. The scent is distinctive, and the results are noticeable pretty quickly if your beard has been neglected.
If you are just starting out with beard grooming and want to keep it simple, these two products alongside a basic beard wash are all you need. If you want a more comprehensive routine covering skincare as well, it is also worth checking out my Gruum review, which covers a full morning routine from face wash through to moisturiser.

Beard Grooming FAQs
What is the difference between beard oil and beard moisturiser?
Beard moisturiser is primarily for the skin underneath the beard, keeping it hydrated and reducing itchiness and flaking. Beard oil conditions the hair itself, adding softness, shine and scent. Use both, moisturiser first and then oil on top.
How often should I use beard oil?
Daily is ideal for most blokes, especially if you have a medium to long beard. For shorter beards, every other day is fine. Apply after washing your face while the skin is still slightly warm.
Is Murdock London beard oil good for sensitive skin?
Generally yes. The formula is not heavily loaded with synthetic additives. That said, if your skin is particularly reactive it is always worth patch testing any new product first.
How long does a 50ml bottle of beard oil last?
Using three drops a day, a 50ml bottle lasts around three to four months. It is much better value than it looks on the shelf.
Do I need beard oil if my beard is short?
Even a short beard benefits from oil, particularly in winter when skin gets drier. It prevents itchiness during the awkward growing phase and keeps the skin underneath in good condition.
