As we enjoy the start of spring in March 2026, I wanted to shine a spotlight on one of my absolute favourite venues in London. If you are ever wandering around Hackney looking for a proper pint, you simply cannot ignore the official home of The Five Points Brewing Company.
Situated just 100 yards from their brewery on the famous ‘five points junction’, The Pembury Tavern ensures that the beer pouring from the taps is always as fresh as it can possibly be.
The successful restoration of The Pembury Tavern came after a massive crowdfunding campaign, which saw Five Points smash their target of £750,000 thanks to over 1,500 dedicated investors. Today, it stands as a shining example of how to run a modern, independent pub while respecting its deep historical roots.
The Beer and The Food
The taproom beautifully showcases the Five Points core range of beers. You will always find staples like the Five Points Pale, XPA, their crisp craft Pils lager, the Railway Porter, and the Brick Field Brown.
Alongside their own brews, the pub features a constantly changing selection across its 20 draught taps, pouring the best independent beers from around the UK. If you have been enjoying my reviews of The Kernel Pale Ale or the Signature Brew Anthology, you will feel right at home with the quality on offer here.
From serving outstanding beer to incredible food, The Pembury Tavern really has it all. Hungry punters can tuck into a delicious array of New York-Neapolitan pizzas expertly created for the venue. Alternatively, if you visit on the weekend, you can order ‘The Pembury Tavern Roast Dinner’, complete with all the essential trimmings. It easily rivals some of the best food I have covered in my London restaurant reviews.
A Landmark Public House
Originally built in the 1860s, The Pembury Tavern is a landmark Hackney public house steeped in history. After being restored in 2006 following a fire under the previous ownership of Milton Brewery, it became a regular fixture in The Good Beer Guide and a key player in bringing good beer back to the area.
Ed Mason, Co-Founder and Managing Director of The Five Points Brewing Company, summed up the importance of the venue perfectly: “The Pembury Tavern has been a Hackney institution for one hundred and fifty years providing the local community with a place to relax, enjoy good company and have a great beer. We are extremely honoured to be the custodians and excited to be able to showcase our beers. The Pembury Tavern is a landmark milestone in our Five Points’ journey.”
The Redesign
The Five Points Brewery Company took a sensitive and considered approach to the design and restoration of the pub, ensuring it remains classic and timeless. Locals were especially pleased to see that the much-loved bar billiards table was kept exactly where it belongs.
Speaking on the redesign, Jo Hunter from Hunter’s Daughter London explained their thought process: “The design was influenced by two key factors; traditional pubs and the freshness and boldness of The Five Points identity. Rather than replicate heavily embellished Victorian pubs, we opted for a more timeless approach, keeping things neat and simple. This has been coupled with influences from the bold no-nonsense identity of The Five Points Brewing. Strong colour-blocking, visual datums and stripped-back modesty with an emphasis on the beer and the bar taking centre stage.”
