Schwartz Garlic Granules are one of those pantry staples that I am almost convinced I could live off alone.

You really can’t go wrong with garlic: it tastes amazing, it can transform every dish, and it has a long list of health benefits. Plus, you can be absolutely assured that you won’t be caught short with any vampires after eating a meal that I’ve cooked!

I was recently lucky enough to try Schwartz Garlic Granules instead of my usual traditional garlic cloves, and I absolutely had to share what I liked so much about them.

But before I get into the cooking, here are some of the amazing benefits of eating garlic that you might not know about.

Why Garlic is a Superfood

1. It’s Perfect for Flu Season

Garlic is really cool because it actually works hard at boosting your immune system, making it the perfect way to combat—or prevent—the common cold.

There are various studies which support the use of daily garlic supplements. Many claim that garlic can reduce the effects of colds by over 60%. So, if you feel a sniffle coming on, adding extra garlic to your dinner is a great natural remedy.

2. It Truly is Medicinal

Not only can garlic help you if you’re suffering from a cold, but it is actually really useful for other medical conditions.

  • Hypertension: Garlic is proven to help with hypertension. One study found that 600–1,500mg of aged garlic extract was just as effective at fighting high blood pressure as some actual medications.
  • Candida: Garlic can also help kill candida, which means if you’re suffering from thrush or yeast infections, you are definitely going to want to reach for those garlic supplements (or just eat more of the good stuff!).

Now, onto the taste test.

Schwartz Garlic Granules simply taste amazing! When I first researched garlic granules, I wasn’t entirely sure what to make of them. I am a bit of a purist, so I looked at how they described themselves to see how they could compare with fresh garlic.

Here’s what Schwartz has to say:

“This versatile flavour is used to complement a huge variety of savoury dishes, including all kinds of meat and roast potatoes. We only crush and dry fresh whole garlic cloves for a sweet and strong flavour. Our convenient-to-use garlic has a beautifully crisp aroma and classic taste to finish your dishes with fantastic flavour.”

The Taste Test: Homemade Lasagne

We decided to test the granules out on a homemade lasagne, which is always one of our family favourites.

We love adding loads of herbs and garlic to our Italian food, and these granules did not disappoint—the lasagne tasted absolutely amazing. The flavour was rich and punchy, without the hassle of peeling and chopping sticky cloves.

We served our meal with a crisp fresh salad and—you guessed it—a hearty portion of garlic bread (sprinkled with even more granules, of course).

My Verdict

We will definitely be making sure we’re stocked up on Schwartz Garlic Granules from now on. They are so much more convenient than fresh bulbs for quick weeknight meals, and the flavour is just as good. We wouldn’t be without them again!

FAQ: Garlic & Health

Are garlic granules as good for you as fresh garlic? While fresh garlic contains the highest levels of allicin (the compound responsible for many health benefits), dried garlic granules still retain many antioxidants and flavour compounds. They are a great convenient alternative.

How much garlic should I eat a day? For health benefits, studies suggest 1–2 cloves of fresh garlic per day is a good aim. If using granules, roughly 1/4 teaspoon equals one clove.

Can garlic really lower blood pressure? Yes, studies have shown that garlic supplements can have a significant impact on reducing high blood pressure, thanks to the active sulphurs which help dilate blood vessels.
