GOAT EXPLOSION – Threatening Skies (2023) | REVIEW
Goat Explosion’s “Threatening Skies” was released on March 10th, 2023, on the record label Into Endless Chaos Records. The album is a formidable addition to the doom metal genre, showcasing the band’s ability to create a brooding, atmospheric sound that envelops the listener in a sense of existential dread.
Although the album was released in March, I have only just discovered it, and I apologise for my late feature. However, there has been very little promotion for this release.
This album is worth discovering, as it showcases a fine example of the German Doom Metal scene. The band formed in 2015 and released their first 4-track demo, “Siesta Infernal”, on July 1st, 2016, setting the tone for what we could expect from Goat Explosion.
“Threatening Skies” is a formidable addition to the Doom Metal genre, showcasing the band’s ability to create a brooding, atmospheric soundscape that envelops the listener in an ear-hugging array of well-mastered riffs, bass, and drums. With slow, crushing riffs and hypnotic drumming, tracks like “The Slumbering Judgement” draw the listener in.
The vocals and lyricism on “Threatening Skies” are highlights of the album. “Dawn of the Red” is a fantastic blend of atmospheric Doom with heavy bass, pounding drumming, and crisp, clean vocals. The band has paid a lot of attention to their production quality, fusing everything together to create an outstanding sound.
Each instrument and vocal track is clearly defined in the mix, and the mastering is particularly noteworthy, with the album’s dynamic range preserved and the low-end frequencies given ample room to breathe. The end track, “Storm of Sorrows”, is a fine example of this, with a deep low end and the guitars not overpowering the low end.
Overall, Goat Explosion’s “Threatening Skies” is an incredible addition to any collection. The album creates a moody and immersive listening experience, and fans of the Doom genre will find much to enjoy. Newcomers will be drawn in by the album’s powerful song structure and emotional impact.
Highly recommended.
