I had never heard of Curious Brewery before being contacted if I wanted to try their Chapter 1 & 2 creations, the brewery is founded by leading winemakers Chapel Down to discover flavour and creating beers that others can’t.

Curious Brewery has been around since 2011 and has 3 main core beers their Curious Brew which is a premium lager brewed re-fermented with Champagne Yeast and includes Saaz and Cascade hops, which, typing this out makes me thirsty.  Second in their range is their IPA and a Curious Apple which is their twist on the classic cider.

But that is not what we are here to discuss, we’re here for their newly released Curiouser & Curiouser Chapter 2 and they kindly gave me their Chapter 1 to try out also.

The Curiouser & Curiouser range sees Curious Brewery collaborate with breweries from around the UK to bring you unique limited edition beers that lean on winemaking influences.

Chapter 1 is a Wild Fermented Chardonnay & Bacchus Sour Ale brewed with the sour experts, Somerset’s The Wild Beer Company. Curious & The Wild Beer Co only brewed 1,500 bottles and is barrel-aged with Chardonnay & Bacchus wine yeast creating a unique drinking experience.  Bringing over some classic winemaking influences, Chapter 1 is bottled in a 75cl bottle, sealed with a crown cork and The Wild Beer Company’s signature wax seal.

If you’ve been wondering, the name ‘Curiouser & Curiouser’ links to Alice in Wonderland and each beer in the collection will be a different chapter number.  This first release, Chapter 1, has subtle references to the book in the packaging–such as a neck tag around the bottle which I didn’t get but reads: ‘DRINK ME: “Every adventure requires a first sip!”‘.

The acidity with this beer is very fresh and crisp which is balanced by the smooth and textured flavours of English wine to give aromas of citrus, toasted nuts and hints of vanilla.

The beer is gorgeous and with The Wild Beer Co’s touch, the sourness is wonderful, which for a £18.00 sour ale (ABV 4.9%) you can’t go wrong and is a great feature to place amongst friends.  You can still get this beer still on Curious Brewery’s webshop here.

Chapter 2 was released in June 2018 and saw Curious Brewery continue their story into untold brewing techniques and crafting new flavours for us beer lovers to further indulge ourselves (and not forgetting newbies as well!).  Chapter 2 sees the Curiouser & Curiouser range go to a classic farmhouse Saison.

As we all know, there are some fantastic breweries bringing us some great Saisons at the moment and Curious Brewery collaborates with one particular brewer who I would say, release some of the finest beer as well as their Saison’s, Brew By Numbers (BBNo).

This crisp, dry, fruity, Saison is the first of the Curiouser & Curiouser range available in the on-trade across selected Fullers and Barworks (full listings below) as well as online.

Available in limited quantities, this rare beer recreates several of the modern classic English grape varietal, Bacchus, which Chapel Down has developed a strong reputation within its wines and sparkling wines.  These notes are complemented perfectly by the dry and fruity qualities of Brew By Numbers’ house Saison yeast.  Which are amplified by the delicate vinous, floral and soft fruity notes of Hallertau blanc and Huell melon hops.

You can get your mitts on this Saison which comes in at 7.3% ABV and available in a 75cl bottle and retails for £8.00 per bottle and is available to purchase online here and also in selected bars at £8.00 per bottle or £4.75 per half pint.
