When it comes to lads holidays, there are a few destinations that are always at the top of people’s lists. Ibiza, Magaluf, Zante… let’s be honest, these things have been done almost to death. Whilst there’s nothing wrong with taking a trip out to one of these destinations (well, your doctor may say otherwise), there are some other places that are also worth considering if you want to do something a little more out of the ordinary. We’re talking culture and beer, not just beer. We’ve compiled a list of 4 great lads holiday destinations worth considering here.
- Prague, Czech Republic
OK, so Prague is pretty well known when it comes to stag dos and other… questionable affairs. A lot of Brits head over to Prague for these reasons, but there is actually so much more to do in this quaint place, whilst also sampling some of the finest beer. For literature lovers, there are plenty of shrines to Franz Kafka throughout the city, and it’s a great place to visit some interesting museums and landmarks. There is a beautiful castle and St. Vitus Cathedral, which is enough culture to keep you busy for days. On top of this, there are a lot of Jewish synagogues and cemeteries, if you really want to get in some of those historical day trips on your holiday.
We know what you’re thinking. ‘How is this a good place for a lads holiday?’ However, if you want to get yourself a pint in one of Prague’s beautiful, historic bars, you’ll only be putting yourself out around £1.20, at most. That’s right, beer lovers, you won’t have to take a lot of cash here if you want to experience Prague’s nightlife, and the streets are lined with clubs, pubs, and even jazz bars if you want to enjoy a different side to the city. Sure, some of your mates won’t be book worms, but in Prague, there really is something for everybody, so you can split up, and regroup when the night comes around. This is certainly a city worth adding to your list.
- Berlin, Germany
Berlin is one of the best cities to visit if you’re looking for some great nightlife for your lads holiday, with a bit of an edge. It’s not like the type of nightlife on offer in places like Magaluf, but you can stay up for hours, in some of the best warehouse clubs in the world. Berghain is one of the most well-known clubs in Berlin – and the world – but travel lovers beware. Whilst this club is undoubtedly unique – its home being an old (1,500 capacity) power plant – they’re pretty specific about who they let in. In other words, if you’re a tourist, you may queue for hours only to be turned away at the door. There’s some weird stuff going on inside, but if you can get in, then it will be the night of your life.
On top of this, Berlin is a perfect place to spend your days, whilst you’re recovering from those techno nights at Berghain (or any of the other exciting clubs and bars in the city). The East Side Gallery is a must if you want to see that graffitied wall that once separated East and West Germany, and there are also plenty of museums and memorials to commemorate victims of the Holocaust. This place really is bursting with history, and it’s one of those cities that everybody has to visit at least once in their lives. If you like techno – and history – then this is definitely a place that you should consider as your lads holiday destination.
- Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
If you’re looking to go a bit further afield than Europe, then Kuala Lumpur is one of the top destinations for the unique lads holiday. We know, it doesn’t sound like the kind of place that you would consider, but trust us. Kuala Lumpur offers some amazing rooftop bars in some of their high-rise buildings, and there’s nothing like enjoying a drink (or a few drinks) whilst watching the city from above. There are also some hidden underground clubs for those who would prefer to have their feet firmly on the ground, and enough bars to make choosing one out extremely difficult. If you’re also looking for some great food, Kuala Lumpur has it all.
Not only this, but the city is bursting with life in the daytime, from iconic skyscrapers to the Batu Caves; a Hindu temple hidden away in some limestone caves. From bustling markets to skyscrapers as far as the eye can see, there’s a lot to choose from if you make this your lads holiday destination. Check out the Petalz Residence if you’re looking for somewhere to stay, and see what this beautiful city can offer you. The only advice we can give you is that if you want to come to Kuala Lumpur, stay for a while! There is so much to do here, you won’t even know where you and your mates should begin…
- Bangkok, Thailand
Look, if you’ve ever seen The Hangover Part II, you’ll know what we’re talking about here. Of course, trying to make sure that you don’t end up with a face tattoo is the goal here, and there are plenty of other things to do in Bangkok if you’re not looking to get inked. The clubs on offer, like Onyx, are pretty impressive, especially given the fact that the capacity is a whopping 2,500 people. That’s enough room to create a great vibe, and it’s a perfect place if you want to party with the locals and the tourists. Clubs like Levels are also pretty popular, and more westernised if you’re looking for a less-tables, more-party, vibe.
As with every big city, Bangkok has a lot to offer for those who like to make the most of their days on their lads’ trips. From the Grand Palace to a whole host of Buddhist temples, there is so much to do here that you’ll be spoilt for choice. The Khaosan Road is pretty popular amongst tourists, and it’s a good idea to head here if you want to meet new people, and enjoy the shops and bars that the backpackers love. If you’d prefer to stay away from all of the chaos, take the BTS Skytrain to one of Bangkok’s many temples, and try to find yourself a little bit of zen. Whatever you opt for, you certainly won’t be bored in the land of smiles.
If you’re looking to experience a lads holiday with a difference, then why not try out one of these 4 unique destinations? The world is full of great places to party, that are also bursting at the seams where culture is concerned! Which means that instead of spending your days lying around on a sunbed in Magaluf wishing that you had something to do, you can get out there, and experience what the world has to offer with your closest mates. Whether you choose Prague, Berlin, Kuala Lumpur, or Bangkok – or perhaps even somewhere else – make sure that you have a great time on your lads holiday, and make it one to remember!
Note: we know we’ve said it before, but try to avoid face tattoos, you know? The Hangover Part II is a great film, but what is your mother going to say if you come back with one of those things on your face? Good luck, and happy tattoo-free lads holiday!
